Basics of Electromyography
Indications
-
—Pathologies of nerve, muscle and neuromuscular junction
-
—Entrapment neuropathies
-
Carpal tunnel syndrome
-
Ulnar neuropathy
-
—Brachial plexus injuries
-
—Radiculopathy
-
—Polyneuropathies
-
Diabetes
-
—Motor neuron disease
-
ALS
Contraindications
-
Anticoagulant therapy
-
Skin Infections
Parameters
Motor Unit Analysis
Procedure:
-
—Light contraction by patient
-
—Try to isolate one motor unit for analysis
-
Each MUP approximately 12-15 muscle fibers
-
Observe amplitude and frequency
-
—Increase contraction
Abnormal Results:
-
—Motor unit drop out
-
—Fast firing rates
-
—Polyphasic MUP (increased amplitude or timing problems show that there has been previous damage and axon regrowth)
