Basics of Electromyography

Indications

  • —Pathologies of nerve, muscle and neuromuscular junction

  • —Entrapment neuropathies

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Ulnar neuropathy

  • —Brachial plexus injuries

  • —Radiculopathy

  • —Polyneuropathies

  • Diabetes

  • —Motor neuron disease

  • ALS

Contraindications

  • Anticoagulant therapy

  • Skin Infections

Parameters

Motor Unit Analysis

Procedure:

  • —Light contraction by patient

  • —Try to isolate one motor unit for analysis

  • Each MUP approximately 12-15 muscle fibers

  • Observe amplitude and frequency

  • —Increase contraction

Abnormal Results:

  • —Motor unit drop out

  • —Fast firing rates

  • —Polyphasic MUP (increased amplitude or timing problems show that there has been previous damage and axon regrowth)
